This course is designed to provide the Florida Contractor with a very broad look at building envelope components and how, with proper planning, understanding and implementation of creative techniques will result with an energy-conserving, cost-effective building. The energy saving principles have been taken from the US Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Program. Topics to be addressed are building envelope components, climate considerations, thermal efficiency, how moisture affects the building and landscaping for energy efficiency. At the conclusion of this course, the student will be required to take a multiple choice exam and, upon successful completion, will received credit for this one-hour course.

In order to receive credit for this course the participant must successfully complete a series of quizzes designed to test his/her knowledge of the subject presented in this course. To successfully complete this course, the participant must obtain an aggregate score of all the quizzes of 70% or greater.

Number of Classroom Hours: 1 (one) Hour

This course contains at least one hour of Business Practices (BSP)

At the conclusion of the course you will have a greater knowledge base of what building envelope components are, why they are important elements to creating an energy-efficient building, where they are best suited for use and when they make the most sense to incorporate. These simple ideas, when used, can ultimately make a big impact on how we live sustainable lifestyles now and for future generations.

Bonnie Prinse

Ms. Prinse holds a BS Degree in Environmental Studies from Eckerd College and has pursued master degree studies in Aquatic Zoology at the University of South Florida. She has written scientific portions of impact statements for wetland/upland land delineation, endangered species studies, and water quality testing while employed with a civil engineering and architectural firm in Tampa, FL. Her experience in environmental studies and new construction lend itself to documentary film making, particularly environmental stories that have taken her to the Amazon in Peru and to Costa Rica. Most recently her involvement with earthen construction projects led to a video production showcasing the benefits of building “green.”
