This course will look at how Home is defined relative to the Aging Population and Where They will live. With today’s “Aging Tsunami” this information provides a baseline of understanding for you as professionals to know before working with the aging cohort. The trends of where seniors are living now, the costs of construction and living in that particular type of space are discussed. The student will gain an understanding of the elements and necessities of Aging in Place in their own homes for the senior population. The history of elder care and regulatory guidelines, and within the continuum of care will be addressed. The course will also focus on access and proximity of senior living facilities, what’s included in CCRCs (continuing care retirement communities) to include independent living, assisted living and nursing/memory care and how the places seniors select to call home will impact all of us.
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Describe the "Essence of Home."
- Define Aging in Place, including the elements and necessities to successfully do so.
- Study the history of eldercare and how it relates to senior housing today including description, governmental concerns, costs and payment opportunities within the continuum of care.
- Describe new housing trends, where seniors will live in the future and the pros and cons of various senior living options.
Jennie Griggs, BS, MA in Aging Studies, is a geriatric specialist, a course developer, speaker and an instructor for several senior fitness programs. Once successful in the corporate world nationally representing companies in sales, business development and training, Jennie’s life course and personal mission refocused following her health battles and those of her husband, who lost his fight with a lengthy illness and dementia.
Lynne Peer, M. Ed. in Secondary Education, is an instructional designer, corporate trainer and technical writer. She has developed over 75 courses for corporate clients, writes continuing education courses for architects and designers and develops facilitator guides and participant manuals along with train the trainer guidance to help companies deliver their own training sessions.
