Small towns across America offer a variety of essential programs and services that are fundamental to the public and to everyday American life. Although the range of services offered by small towns varies, it is essential that people with disabilities have the opportunity to participate in the programs and services that towns offer.
This course presents an informal overview of some basic ADA requirements and provides cost-effective tips on how small towns can comply with the ADA. Following are key topics to be discussed:

    • The ADA’s Requirements for Small Towns
    • New Construction and Alterations
    • Maintenance of Accessible Features
    • Effective Communication
    • Policies, Practices, and Procedures
    • Processes for Complying with the ADA
    • Accessible Parking
    • Accessible Routes
    • Accessible Entrance

NUMBER OF CLASSROOM HOURS: One (1) hour

This course contains at least one hour of Business Practices (BSP)



Course Objectives


At the conclusion of this course you should have a basic understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act Guide for Small Towns. You will also become familiar with several common problems normally encountered by small town governments and the ADA requirements that apply to each situation.



Instructor Bio


Bonnie PrinseBonnie Prinse

Ms. Prinse holds a BS Degree in Environmental Studies from Eckerd College and has pursued master degree studies in Aquatic Zoology at the University of South Florida. She has written scientific portions of impact statements for wetland/upland land delineation, endangered species studies, and water quality testing while employed with a civil engineering and architectural firm in Tampa, FL. Her experience in environmental studies and new construction lend itself to documentary film making, particularly environmental stories that have taken her to the Amazon in Peru and to Costa Rica. Most recently her involvement with earthen construction projects led to a video production showcasing the benefits of building “green.”
