This one hour interactive distance-learning course is designed to introduce the participant to what features are included in a new home which will qualify it with the Energy Star. Homes that earn the ENERGY STAR must meet guidelines for energy efficiency set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. ENERGY STAR qualified homes are at least 15 percent more energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC), and include additional energy-saving features that typically make them 20–30% more efficient than standard homes.
ENERGY STAR qualified homes can include a variety of energy-efficient features, such as effective insulation, high performance windows, tight construction and ducts, efficient heating and cooling equipment, and ENERGY STAR qualified lighting and appliances.
Through ENERGY STAR, builders and other home industry professionals can differentiate themselves in the market. New homes that qualify as ENERGY STAR provide greater comfort and durability for home buyers. In addition, ENERGY STAR qualified homes help protect the environment by reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with global warming.
The course reviews these features and how builders can incorporate them into their new homes as well as renovations of existing homes.
Upon successful completion of this course participants will be able to:
- Identify specific features that make a new home earn the Energy Star rating
- Summarize how these features work when properly installed
- Discuss what benefits homeowners can expect
- Explain the upside of independent testing and inspection of appliances and equipment
- Assess what it means for the future
Ms. Prinse holds a BS Degree in Environmental Studies from Eckerd College and has pursued master degree studies in Aquatic Zoology at the University of South Florida. She has written scientific portions of impact statements for wetland/upland land delineation, endangered species studies, and water quality testing while employed with a civil engineering and architectural firm in Tampa, FL. Her experience in environmental studies and new construction lend itself to documentary film making, particularly environmental stories that have taken her to the Amazon in Peru and to Costa Rica. Most recently her involvement with earthen construction projects led to a video production showcasing the benefits of building “green.”
