This two hour module introduces the properties of wood. The module presents how wood is used in Millwork, the nature of wood, how it is formed, and how it is handled during manufacturing and distribution. Information is provided on which trees are used for wood products, how a tree’s growth rings and wood density are affected by the climate, and how a log is cut into wood products. Details are also provided on how wood is treated to protect it from destructive elements such as moisture, weathering, fungus, insects, and fire. The following topics will be discussed in detail:

·         Wood Properties

·         Wood Deterioration Agencies

·         Artificial Resistance

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this module you will be able to determine the difference between Softwoods and Hardwoods; and between Sapwood and Heartwood. You will also be able to identify the growth rings of a tree, as well as two distinct ways of sawing lumber. You will be able to identify wood properties including: insulation, thermal properties, dimensional stability, durability, appearance, workability, and availability. You will be able to recognize the effects of wood deterioration agencies such as fungi, insects, mechanical wear, weathering, and fire. You will also learn about the artificial resistances use in wood, such as paint and preservatives.
