Course Description


This course will review the history of the paint industry, what comprises a synthetic paint, what comprises an environmentally safe paint, safe painting techniques and look closely at their composition as well as review their meaning in a world moving towards environmental conservation. The paint manufacturing industry has come almost full circle in its approach to paint production. Historic uses of paint, its composition and how each has evolved up to modern times are reviewed with emphasis placed on synthetic and natural ingredients. The pros and cons of each is examined and a look forward to how the building industry may take into account the benefits of using more environmentally safe paints.



Course Objectives


Upon successful completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Discuss how paint creation has evolved throughout history and evaluate the economics of using natural paints
  • Describe pigments, binders, solvents and additives, where they come from and how they are used
  • Identify a natural paint and ingredients typically found in natural paints
  • Define a VOC (volatile organic compound) and discuss how they impact our environment and demonstrate the safe disposal of all paints


Instructor Bio


Bonnie PrinseBonnie Prinse

Ms. Prinse holds a BS Degree in Environmental Studies from Eckerd College and has pursued master degree studies in Aquatic Zoology at the University of South Florida. She has written scientific portions of impact statements for wetland/upland land delineation, endangered species studies, and water quality testing while employed with a civil engineering and architectural firm in Tampa, FL. Her experience in environmental studies and new construction lend itself to documentary film making, particularly environmental stories that have taken her to the Amazon in Peru and to Costa Rica. Most recently her involvement with earthen construction projects led to a video production showcasing the benefits of building “green.”
