Course Description
Course Objectives
- Use standard terminology that is used in connection with sharp-crested weirs for open channel flow measurement.
- Calculate the flow rate over a suppressed rectangular weir for given head over the weir and weir dimensions, using the Kindsvater-Carter equation.
- Calculate the flow rate over a contracted rectangular weir for given head over the weir and weir dimensions, using the Kindsvater-Carter equation.
- List the conditions required in order to use the appropriate form of the Francis equation instead of the Kindsvater-Carter equation to calculate the flow rate over a suppressed rectangular weir and over a contracted rectangular weir for given head over the weir and weir dimensions.
- List the conditions required in order to use the Cone equation, Q = 2.49 H2.48, to calculate the flow rate over a V-notch weir for given head over the weir and weir dimensions.
- Calculate the flow rate over a V-notch weir for notch angles other than 90o, given head over the weir and weir dimensions, using the Kindsvater-Shen equation.
- Check on whether required conditions are met and make calculations of flow rate over a cipolleti weir for given head over the weir and weir dimensions.
- Answer questions about installation and use guidelines for sharp-crested weirs for open channel flow measurement.
Instructor Bio
Dr. Bengtson is a graduate of Iowa State University with B.S. and M.S. degrees and of the University of Colorado with a PhD. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Missouri. He has spent 30 years in engineering education in teaching and administrative positions, including six years as Dean of Engineering at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. His areas of expertise are environmental engineering, hydrology and hydraulics, engineering science and renewable energy systems. He did consulting work while holding the academic positions. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Bengtson worked for Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing as a Product Development Engineer and for E. I. duPont deNemours as a Process Development Engineer. Dr. Bengtson has authored numerous publications, presentations and technical reports. He is currently active in providing continuing education opportunities for Professional Engineers and is the founder of www.engineeringexceltemplates.com and www.EngineeringExcelSpreadsheets.com, sites with the objective of providing inexpensive, easy to use Excel spreadsheets for a variety of engineering calculations.
