Course Description


This two hour course introduces the properties of wood and presents how wood is used in Millwork, the nature of wood, how it is formed, and how it is handled during manufacturing and distribution. Information is provided on which trees are used for wood products, how a tree’s growth rings and wood density are affected by the climate, and how a log is cut into wood products. Details are also provided on how wood is treated to protect it from destructive elements such as moisture, weathering, fungus, insects, and fire. The following topics will be discussed in detail:

  • Artificial Resistance


Course Objectives


Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
  • determine the difference between softwoods and hardwoods; and between sapwood and heartwood
  • identify the growth rings of a tree, as well as two distinct ways of sawing lumber
  • describe wood properties including: insulation, thermal properties, dimensional stability, durability, appearance, workability, and availability
  • recognize the effects of wood deterioration agencies such as fungi, insects, mechanical wear, weathering, and fire
  • explain the artificial resistances used in wood, such as paint and preservatives
