Course Description


This one hour distance continuing education course focuses on how the sun’s light is used to illuminate a building’s interior space. This course provides the student an understanding of contemporary, gentler illumination techniques with diffused, comfortable daylight via proven design approaches, lighting systems, glazing materials and health benefits derived as a result.



Course Objectives


Upon completion this course, the student will have a better understanding of fenestration placement and construction techniques and will be able to:

  • Discuss the health benefits of natural sunlight as illumination in a building’s interior
  • Describe various systems and products used for light distribution via lighting control methods both automated and manual
  • Identify basic visual acuity and performance issues essential to an effective daylighting design
  • Explain the vital importance of proper operation and long term maintenance of lighting control systems


Instructor Bio


Bonnie PrinseBonnie Prinse

Ms. Prinse holds a BS Degree in Environmental Studies from Eckerd College and has pursued master degree studies in Aquatic Zoology at the University of South Florida. She has written scientific portions of impact statements for wetland/upland land delineation, endangered species studies, and water quality testing while employed with a civil engineering and architectural firm in Tampa, FL. Her experience in environmental studies and new construction lend itself to documentary film making, particularly environmental stories that have taken her to the Amazon in Peru and to Costa Rica. Most recently her involvement with earthen construction projects led to a video production showcasing the benefits of building “green.”
