Course Description

This is the first part of a five-part (11-hour) series dedicated to the Design-Build Method of Construction Project Delivery. The entire course package provides the construction professional with a thorough understanding of the Design-Build process and how it applies to all three parties: the owner, the designer, and the builder. This series introduction will focus on describing Design-Build and will present a short history of Design-Build, and explain how Design-Build contrasts with Design-Bid-Build and Construction Management. Fast Tracking and Partnering will also be discussed.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course participants will be able to:
- Define the design-build (D-B) delivery system and describe how construction management (CM) evolved in the 1970’s to resolve D-B-B’s increasing shortcoming
- Indicate the major steps necessary to perform a design build projects
- Describe the triumvirate of the D-B-B parties and explain the performance and legal responsibilities of each party
- Compare and contrast D-B-B construction management and D-B in terms of cost and time
Instructor Bio
P.THOMAS GARD, PE, ESQ, PMP
Tom Gard holds a J.D. in Government Contract Law from Catholic University of America, a M.B.A. in Financial Management, Northern Michigan University, a M.S.C.E. in Construction Management from Purdue University, and a B.S. in Urban Planning/Civil Engineering from Michigan State University. He is currently the President of Dominion Project Management, Inc. of Leesburg, Virginia.
Mr. Gard is a highly esteemed speaker and writer with regard to engineering management, engineering law and project management subjects. Tom has spoken before the American Bar Association on privatization and various engineering organizations on project management and engineer law topics. He has been published several times in engineering periodicals. He currently is an adjunct professor in the graduate program at George Washington University lecturing and writing on project management topics.
