Course Description


Sexual abuse, as well as other forms of workplace abuse, has become a national topic of conversation. Given many available choices for where to spend their time, why would employees pursuing excellence, choose to do so in an environment demanding they disrespect themselves by accepting sexual abuse without complaint?

Of particular concern is the prevalence of sexual discrimination and abuse in the architectural profession. Compared to the rest of America, we badly fail as a profession in protecting our members.
 
We can correct this issue internally, by changing the way employees are viewed and treated. We can just warn young people entering the design schools to not do so, unless they are willing to suffer abuse. Or, we can wait for the legal profession to make it very costly for this type of behavior to continue.


Course Objectives


Upon successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:

  • Recognize the behaviors which can be classified as sexual harassment.
  • Explain the potential damage to targets experiencing harassment.
  • Examine the responsibility of managers to create a safe working environment for their subordinates.
  • Determine how liability is decided for companies in which harassment occurs.
  • Understand recommended company procedures to prevent, and respond to, incidents of harassment.
  • Discuss the extent of sexual harassment in the profession of architecture.

 

 



Instructor Bio

Paul is a Registered Architect with over forty years of experience, a course developer and has been a teacher in multiple venues in the past. He is also a writer in many venues, having developed many studies, a few published articles, numerous short stories, multiple screenplays, two non-fiction manuals for church design and one novel. More to the focus of this endeavor, Paul has also created presentations for twenty-six lunch and learn presentations for building material manufacturers, webinars covering the subjects of Aging-in-Place and Architectural Acoustics and eleven distance learning courses for architects, engineers and contractors. As he nears retirement from managing his small architectural practice, Paul hopes to focus even more of his energy on teaching and on course development.
